Meet Maritime Modern Blog Hop & A Giveaway!

Well hello there! Welcome to day two of the Meet Maritime Modern Blog Hop!

I am so pleased and proud (super duper proud even) to have an opportunity for you to meet some of the amazing members of the Maritime Modern Quilt Guild. We are forty strong and I am continually impressed by the skill, passion and just plain niceness of the folks in our amazing little guild.

I started the Guild back in 2013 because I needed to find my people - like minded folks who cut up fabric and put it back together in some sort of modern way. I found them! It is an absolute Joy being the President as we have found our way from a half a dozen ladies who came together on a stormy night to today where we are continually learning and inspiring each other. We truly do have a modern community now in Good Ol' Nova Scotia, one which I know will continue to grow!

So, something about me...I think I will let you get to know me through a little story. This happened yesterday....

I am a Project Manager by day, a quilty addict by night. I travel quite a bit for my day job and lately I have had the good fortune to travel to every nook and cranny of my home Province. Of course while I am driving around I am constantly on the look out for quilt photo opportunities. Do you do this? Fact - no quilt is truly finished until it has had it's photo shoot!

Besides my day job I have also journeyed into the world of teaching this year, teaching beginner quilting classes at our LQS Patch Halifax. These two plus baby quilts are samples that I sewed along with my students, they are also earmarked for two very special babies-on-the-way. Fact - several years ago I was paralyzed with fear at the though of public speaking and teaching was something unattainable. Nowadays - people cannot shut me up! In fact if you take me to Karaoke you will have to tear the microphone out of my hand!

I saw this amazing old wooden building, peeling and a little neglected, and immediately knew it would make a great backdrop for these little quilts. I made a quick U-turn -  Fact - I rarely follow speed limits - and pulled in and started scouting the area.

 

Duct tape in hand, quilts are on the side of the building in a heartbeat...and then a pick up truck pulls up. Apparently the building is not abandoned! AND I am trespassing...the house across the road is friends of the owners and they call and report me! Fact - I love to break the rules! I put on the smile,  and talk my way into finishing my photo-shoot. Truck pulls away.

Start snapping again - clearly not noticing that every picture has a reflection in the window not of the beautiful country side but of my car with the trunk open and sometimes even me squinting! Fact - I am not an award winning photographer. Pick Up Truck number two pulls up! This is the husband of the woman who stopped the first time. He informs me I am trespassing and I again turn on the charm - Fact - I am charming (oh and modest) - and instead of kicking me off the property we talk quilts and I think I may even have a new custom order coming! Fact - I just bought a shiny new Janome 8900 and have deemed myself a sweatshop until it is paid for.

So now that I have trespassed, taken pictures and broken some driving laws I throw the quilts into the back seat and realize Charlie(my dog) - Fact - I am the mother of three fur babies - has left mud everywhere and now quilts need to be washed - AGAIN.

So, there it is, a day (well an hour anyway) in the life of me. I wonder how many rules I will break today? Cannot wait!

Quilt Atlantic

Last weekend started out like this...

Pawing through Maritime Modern Quilt Guild member quilts to get ready for a talk on Modern Quilts at the second annual Quilt Atlantic retreat. I am not going to lie. Preparing for this event made me a bit nervous. Ok, A LOT nervous. But getting to play with all of these quilts made it worth it. Here the pile is ready to go!

My trusty MMQG VP Jennifer (from A Quarter Inch from the Edge) and I jumped into the car and raced for the South Shore of Nova Scotia where the retreat was being held at the beautiful White Point Beach Resort. I will not bore you with the details, but I got lost on the way, had to drive like a crazy woman and ended up running into the room for my 10 am talk at 10 am! Sweet Jesus people I was losing my cool trying to get there on time...I am NEVER late. Poor Jennifer tried to calm me down by talking out a plan for a MMQG retreat. Bad news, I was barely on time for my talk, good news we have the bones of a retreat formed in our heads!

The talk itself was so much fun! I really don't know why I get nervous of these things. I love to talk and people seemed to want to listen so off I went. There is something to be said for talking about what you love. That passion comes through!

After two hours of fun talking quilts, we took a  jaunt around the resort and visited the beach. This was the first day that it felt like Spring may actually come. It was 14 degrees above zero, it was not snowing, and I didn't have to wear a coat! And the view....

Of course, we were out and about and Jenn had a finished quilt to photo-shoot so we did a bit of that as well... never leave home without a quilt!

We also met some of the local residents, who inspire all things rabbity around the place

 

 

 

What can I say, beside the mad dash, it was a glorious day. I absolutely love spreading the word about Modern Quilting and our wee Guild. And while being a public speaker is not on my "I love to do this every day" list, I can talk about quilts forever!

I Swear, it wasn't that big yesterday

My to do pile that is. It seems when I started my day yesterday I did not have THAT many projects underway or wanting to be underway, and yet when I came home from the MMQG Sew In last night and really started looking at what I got this morning...I have all of this going on

You see our local LQS Atlantic Fabrics was gracious enough to host our March Sew In AND give us a special shopping discount for the day. So from my shopping list I got this...a super cute ribbon to go with the petite house fabric I have to make a Fairy Tooth pillow for a special little girl

A couple of zippers, because all of a sudden those mermaids need to be a pencil case. Like STAT.

Some navy and red for a custom flag pillow order I just got.

And then, there was this...all the way from Qatar, Five meters of coveted IKEA Nummers. Thanks Scrapmaster for hooking a girl up!

And then, I finally made a decision about what to make with my coveted jelly roll of Botanics, so I got the solids that I need to make a top. Kona Ash and White.

And then I needed to replace one of my favorite rules my 9 1/2 Square. Somehow it must have been heated and it is warped. So sad to see my 13 year old buddy go. But I got this shiny new 71/2 square.

Oh and I might have also got some actual sewing done...perhaps I finished my Riley Blake Challenge Quilt top...

Man I love Sew Ins, and Sew Ins with shopping are extra special :) Thank you Atlantic Fabrics for a great day.

A Little Hope

It's Friday. This week has been full of serious highs and serious lows. I will not bore you with the details but lets just say that I am stoked that the week is nearly over!

With all the hoopla I have not had much time to get to the machine, but I did finish this little flimsy off...

If you remember, Hope is from the improv piecing class that I took earlier this month. I had a house and some trees too, but when I tried to put them all together it just did not "work". But Hope was the important thing for me, so I quilted and bound it and hung it up so that I could see it as I walked into the room.

Sometimes you just heed a little hope.

Giant Star Part II: A Finish

We are expecting yet another winter storm here in good old Nova Scotia tonight so today I sewed up a storm...quilting and binding complete and here is a giant star lovely.

This quilt is the sister to this Giant Star that I made almost a year ago using this tutorial. Yes, it has been in the closet, waiting for it's perfect home.

I am pretty over the winter weather and the havoc it is playing with my quilty photo shoots. They are not too pretty to be honest, but Star quilts need bloggy love too, bad pictures or not.

After this little marathon binge, I still have some stitches left in me, so off to finish a wee baby quilt. Maybe I will have a Sunday finish too! Or, I might keep on with this bottle of wine and watch tv. It's hard to tell...
