WiP Wednesday: The one where I am frustrated

OK you heard it here first, I am soooo frustrated! No surprise, my WiP this week is the Triangle Quilt. The surprise is that I am running into this

Right! those are some blunt mismatched triangles right there! Why oh why is this happening? I cut precisely, I pieced the rows precisely, but when the rows started coming together I hit this. Ugh! Here is some more of the injustice...

Oh the humanity! I feel like I am letting fabric down everywhere, that Carnaby Street is crying silent tears. I am making a bad name for triangles everywhere!

Ok, taking a deep breath. I mean this is not an international crisis, it is not like 100% cotton is becoming obsolete (oh the horror!), but I am disappointed that this is not turning out as I had hoped. It seems like this is happening a lot lately.

With so many more rows to go, and so many already put together, I have decided (right or wrong) to soldier on. This quilt is just for me, it will cuddle me on the couch, regardless of it's imperfect points. But I do wish I can figure out the issue. Any advice would be welcome...

On a happier note, I did finish my second orb block this week. This one will be a pillow when my pillow forms make their final journey from Ontario to my new home...please come home pillow forms, I miss you!

Well, I am off to stare at the blunt triangle tips for just a bit longer. Little buggers. Thanks for visiting and listening to me vent, aren't you glad you tuned in!

I'm Linking up with Freshly Pieced, flaws and all :)

  1. Total bummer about the triangles Adrienne. I've been staring at your photos trying to figure out what went wrong. I went back in your blog to the previous post about these and I noticed something - when you have your triangles pieced into rows, it looks like the triangle points go right up to the edges of your rows. I particularly noticed this in the third picture of your June 14 post. Take a look at this photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stitchedincolor/6642472853/ and see how when the triangles are joined into rows, the point of each triangle is about 1/4" away from the top/bottom edge of the row. I'm thinking that maybe something went wrong with how you pieced the triangles together, ending up with the points right at the edge, so when the rows are assembled the points get cut off??

Your orb block is beautiful - I love that dark background. It really makes the colours pop!

  2. Oh, Adrienne, those are such lovely strips of triangles. Sorry it did not go as planned, but it will be a pretty quilt when finished - a very pretty learning experience! Here is a great link I found. It looks like you did not have the seams overlap at the 1/4" from the tips. Hope this helps for next time!

    1. Thanks Lorna, I can see what I did wrong, when piecing, I put my points right to the top. Yes, a pretty learning experience, I am ok with it. I slept on it, apologized to the fabric, it knows I will still love it :)

  3. What a bummer! I only pieced like 15 triangles but learned that you have to fold up the seam allowance between the last two triangles you pieced, before you line up and add the next one (if that makes sense). I think that is the practical application of what the ladies above are saying.

But! Are you going to sell or gift this? If it's just for you, and it's not all the triangles, I would not unpick. Count it as practice--enjoy it and the next one will be perfect.

Perfect can be for your orb block this week. ;) gorgeous!

  5. Bummer, hopefully you will get it figured out. The only way to learn is by making mistakes though right? I think it will still be pretty, and most likely non-quilting folk won't even notice :)
